I am a novelist and a journalist who writes for the Guardian newspaper, in particular its opinion blog Comment Is Free. I have lived in the east London borough of Hackney since 1981, am married (to Sheila Fitzsimons, the Guardian's Head of Editorial Development) and have six children, ranging in age from 23 to five. I’ve been writing for a living for 26 years. My most recent novel is The Adoption, published by Headline Review.
I publish two blogs: one, Big Britain, looks at a range of national issues and preoccupations and links to local blogs across the British Isles; the other, Clapton Pond, is about my neighbourhood and developments in London at large with relevance to it, notably the 2012 Olympics and the policies of the London mayor.
Too many for my own good.
