What are we like round here? The ads and posters in Palm 2 tell their own story: we're agitational, alternative, entrepreneurial, musical and rather pre-occupied with our health. We're a bit affluent too, though mostly at the low end of the scale. That's some of us, anyhow. A broader picture of this part of Clapton is provided by the demographic profiles on the Council's website.
Leabridge ward, where many readers of this blog live and vote, is decribed as having a similar age profile to Hackney as a whole, with a large concentration of 20 to 45 year-olds. People here are overall better qualified than residents of the borough in general, yet a greater percentage are unemployed. We have a larger proportion of Asian residents than most wards in Hackney and a lower proportion of white ones. We also have more married couples and more multi-person households. We're quite a conundrum.
Across Lower Clapton Road in Hackney Downs ward, the stats are more in line with those for the rest of Hackney, though with a slightly higher proportion of both black and Asian residents, along with a lower proportion of white ones. You can read the ward profiles for all of Hackney's wards here. They're an interesting read. But bear one important thing in mind. Most of the data they contain was drawn from the 2001 census. That was a long time ago. Data from the latest census, conducted last year, will soon start to be made available. To better watch this place, watch this space.
