Granny's Caribbean take-away has been in Downs Road for at least as long as I've been living close to Clapton Pond (21 years). I hadn't been in for quite a while, but was prompted to by the hand-written sign that has appeared in the window: "Shop lease for sale. For details ring 07956974923". Was Granny's going to close? Well, I was told, it certainly seemed possibile.
This news adds to the growing sense that the character of this little stretch of street opposite the pond off Lower Clapton Road could be about to alter radically. My nickname for it is "hairdo corner" due to the cluster of hair and beauty establishments there. But the God First unisex premesis has been for sale for quite a while Trinity hair and beauty has recently been replaced by a solicitor.
True, Dr Faderz and the Stylistic hair and beauty academy are still with us and, just at the bend into Cricketfield Road, New Look seems to never close. Diamond Cut Barbers and, above it, All About Yuh Hair still advertise their presence in the Clapton Business Centre. Even so, with the conversion of the former Cricketers pub into stylish apartments looking about complete, the stage looks set for further gentification incursions. Keep watching that space.
P.S. As commenter Ben points out below (12/09/2013) Trinity has been replaced by the solicitor Owen Stevens. I've updated my original post accordingly. This is a very recent change (the photo of Trinity I link to was taken on 28 July this year), but the odd thing is that though I'd noticed the arrival of the solictor when walking past, I hadn't noticed that it had replaced the hair and beauty salon. I've often noticed how quickly I forget the where shops that disappear used to be. But them things around here are changing so very quickly.
