The very dark ground floor building on the right might, from this distance, suggest a place of curious rituals involving cauldrons and toads but in fact it is Candela, the neighbourhood's new latin American restaurant. I went there the other week and it was great: nice food, not too fancy, charming service, sensible prices and fabulously flashy cocktails. Like all newly-opened eateries on Lower Clapton Road its furniture is vintage, its walls are distressed and there are cacti on its tables. Like so many of the good things in this neighbourhood Abdullah from Palm 2 is involved in the venture. And yet it is entirely distinctive. So go there, why don't you? It's on the junction with Rowhill Road. And in the meantime take a long look at the building it is part of. You see so much more when you look up.
