With the Council campaigning to inform private renters of their rights, I thought I'd look up how many people in this part of Hackney are housed in that sector of the market. It turns out to be more than I'd expected and also more than for the borough as a whole.
Figures from the last census show that in 2011, 29.2% of households in Hackney Downs ward rented privately while in Leabridge ward the figure was a very high 35%. For Hackney as whole the rate was 28.9% which was, in turn, higher than the 25% average for all of Greater London. So there's a lot of private renting around here and if the trend in Hackney reflects that for London as a whole, it is increasing.
And just as demand for private renting is increasing, so are demands for better regulation of rents and conditions in the private rented sector, not least in Hackney. This will be a hot issue in the forthcoming election, and rightly so.
