Value For Money, Tory-Style

Honouring a promise made during his campaign, The Blond has appointed a "Forensic Audit Panel" to look into GLA expenditure and LDA grants. It includes:

+ Patience Wheatcroft, a distinguished financial journalist and editor of the Sunday Telegraph until she resigned over integration issues last September. She will head the panel. Not known for left-of-centre views.

+ Stephen Greenhalgh, leader of Tory-controlled Hammersmith and Fulham Council. Known among opposition Labour group and others for cunningly-concealed cuts in services.

+ Edward Lister, Leader of Tory-controlled Wandsworth Council forever. By interesting coincidence the Standard yesterday carried news that he is supporting his local street pastors initiative - with money, mind, to be fair.

There's also an independent adviser from PricewaterhouseCoopers. That said, would it be rude to describe these appointments as politically-motivated and therefore unlikely to produce anything other than politically convenient conclusions? And will we all get to read them or just Boris? The full panel list is here and Pippar Crerar has more.

Seems like an excellent idea to me. I wonder if they'd be willing to come and do Hackney for us when they've finished? Axing Hackney Today would be a marvellous start.

Love the blog design, by the way. Much more attractive and a lot easier to read.
