Johnson On Knife Crime

From the Standard:

"Boris Johnson today said there was a knife crime in London every hour. A staggering 7,428 offences - a third of all the non-fatal incidents in England and Wales - were committed in the capital in a year. This is the equivalent of more than 20 a day. The Mayor said the latest knife crime figures were "sobering" but could even be underestimated by several thousand acts of violence a year."

I know it's too early in his term for him to have an interest in talking this issue down, but I'm quite struck that he's still talking it up so much. Now read on.

The Mayor is a father of four and he is obviously affected by the figures and deeply committed to reducing knife crime. All the publicity is hammering home the severity of the problem and that is attracting the attention of figures in the public eye, like Lily Allen.

What would be really great and I am positive would be a big help, is if people like Lily Allen took a stand by saying they would no longer indulge in heavy drinking. It would be very hard, because Lily is young, pretty and wants to have a great time, which is totally understandable and at the moment having a great time means clubbing and heavy drinking. However, how brave would she be and what a fantastic role model would she be if she gave up drinking, or drastically restricted her drinking to the medically safe limit each week.
