From the Clapton Pond Neighbourhood Action Group on behalf of Cllr Rathbone:
"As you may be aware if you attended the last CPNAG meeting, some of our members have expressed concerns about The Cricketers pub, which is at the junction of Clarence Road and Downs Road. Since the closure of the Palace Pavillion and Fountain venues on Lower Clapton Road, we are concerned that The Cricketers has become a new focal point for drug dealing in the area, and that this has seen an increase of violent incidents and antisocial behaviour at the venue. There have been a number of violent incidents at the venue and since our last meeting two people have been hospitalised following a fight between customers in which glass bottles were used as weapons. Following this latest incident, the police have called for a review of the license to the basement venue at The Cricketers, which currently operates until 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
Though the current licensing review covers only the basement venue, Police Licensing hope that a successful closure of this venue will allow them to work with the licensees to improve matters with the main ground floor venue. The attached letter details the concerns raised by residents so far. We hope to submit the letter on behalf of our members and other local residents, and so please read through and let us know if you are in support. In addition to this letter, personal submissions from local residents will carry a great deal of weight with the licensing committee so, if you’re in agreement, please write to the council with your own comments. Try to use the categories used in the CPNAG letter attached. Include details of any experiences you may have had with the venue – if you live nearby and have been bothered by noise from the venue, or have felt intimidated by people drinking on the street outside the venue - or if you agree with any points in the letter and feel that a such a venue should not be operating in your neighbourhood. Any comments will be taken into account by the licensing committee, and every submission will help.Past experience has taught us that although people are often wary of speaking out against a venue, police, local councilors, and many residents are already involved, so you will be adding to a community voice that already exists."
