On Sunday, my wife and I went to the Castle Cinema above the Spar/Eat 17 shop on Brooksby's Walk for the first time. The outing was a belated birthday treat from my three younger children. It was also the keeping of my promise to myself to hurry up and visit this enterprising revival of a long lost local moving picture house.
I wasn't disappointed. There's a spacious, handsomely decorated bar and the cinema itself, decked out with chairs that used to furnish a hotel, is intimate and comfortable at the same time. As you can see from my photo, original features from the original Castle Electric Theatre, opened in 1913, have been painstakingly restored.
That first incarnation of the cinema ended in 1958, and I was once a customer of the snooker hall the space later became. The new cinema is a delight. Read about its story so far here, see what's showing here, and become a member via here.
