M*A*S*H was one of the best films I have ever seen. Very different to the subsequent series.

Yes, indeed. A renegade, at loose for so long amongst the Hollywood hacks. An authentic auteur, Altman seemed set to confirm Yeats' defence of the artist in age in Why Should Old Men Not Be Mad? He was plucked too soon.

Thanks for the link Dave and I like the quotation as well. I have long thought that the 70s was the apogee of American cinema.

I just wish more high-profile creative people had that spirit of mischief and independence. Maybe I'm just getting old.
