After leaving Glasgow Central I walked across the city to Queen Street station, which stands next to George Square. There I observed the disrespectful attitude of Glaswegian seagulls to one of the more illustrious former prime ministers of Britain. As you can see, the statue of Sir Bobby is comprehensively bird pooped and even in a nation where Conservatism has long been close to death I'm surprised the City Council can't afford to employ someone to take a stiff brush to the man who did so much to tackle the antisocial behaviour of his time. Peel is also famous for raising the phoenix of the Conservative Party from the wreckage of the old Tories. This, presumably, is why his latest biographer Douglas Hurd has drawn certain comparisons between his subject and David Cameron. This obliges me to think a bit more deeply about that statue-seagull scene. Is it an omen? And, if so, what of?
Perhaps it means that no matter how you care about nature, nature cares less about you...
